The Pilates fitness program has its origins in the work of the late Joseph Pilates, who was born in 1880 in Germany. He was a frail child and turned to physical fitness programs to improve his body image, developing talents in various sports. After he had emigrated to the United States, he had set up a fitness studio in New York, where he taught his students a program he had developed from his knowledge of different fitness methods, e.g. gymnastics, body building, yoga, boxing, etc. combined with a correct breathing method. His studio began to attract the "elite" of New York, with leading ballet dancers, actors, actresses, sportspersons and members of the police force. His clients were attracted to a workout that built strength without adding bulk, balancing strength with flexibility, and achieving the perfect harmony between mind and muscles. Over time different methods have evolved from Joseph Pilates original program. The first BODY CONTROL PILATES® company was founded in England in 1995 and has trained almost 1000 teachers in the UK, as well as 800 teachers worldwide. Margaret is a certified instructor for mat work and has brought the method to KZN. She has now set up a studio in Hillcrest at the BODYOLOGY Institute of Health Our group classes are small, therefore special attention can be given to individual needs of clients.
